1.Nokia Big Screen Beta

Platform: Symbian^3

Price: Free

There aren’t too many Nokia apps that an iPhone or Android smartphone user would envy, but the new Big Screen Beta from Nokia Beta Labs would be one of them. This app is designed specifically for Nokia phones with a built-in HDMI port (in this case, only the N8 for now), and works by presenting a custom multimedia interface on a HDTV for playing back music, movies and photos in full high definition. You control playback using a remote controller interface on the N8, or you can pair a Bluetooth remote, keyboard, or even Wii Remote to control playback. Download from the Nokia Beta Labs website.

2.PhatPad

Platform: iOS (iPad)

Price: $5.99

Turn your iPad into a full digital notepad with the latest software release from Phatware. Unlike other digital note-taking apps for the iPad, which typically restrict you to one type of input only (whether it’s handwritten text or entry via the keyboard), PhatPad lets you mix everything on the one page. Even better, it has a built-in handwriting recognition engine to convert your scribbles to text and transform your scraggly circles and squares into smooth geometric shapes. Pages can be converted to PDF, sent via email, or synced with a Dropbox account. To get the best results, you’ll need to buy a capacitive stylus, such as the Targus Stylus for Apple iPad.

3.Swype

Platform: Android

Price: Free

Get it while you can! Swype has just opened up its beta program again, letting any Android phones with HVGA resolution or higher (lowly QVGA displays need not apply) run this clever custom keyboard. The idea behind Swype is that you don’t have to multi-tap on the keyboard to write words; simply tap on the first letter and then drag your finger across to the next letters, and Swype will interpret the gesture as a complete word. Once you get the hang of it, Swype is much more efficient than typing with the regular keyboard, and you’ll wonder how you ever did without it! Download directly from the Swype website.

4.Foodspotting Beta

Platform: Android

Price: Free

How many times have you whipped out your Android phone to take a photo of a sumptuous meal to post on Facebook or Twitter? If you do this a lot, the new Foodspotting Beta for Android will be right up your alley. Foodspotting is a social network for foodies, helping you to find the best food in your neighbourhood and letting you share your favourite dishes with other foodspotters and those in your Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare networks. The Android app is in Beta at the moment, and you’ll have to sign up on the Foodspotting website for an invitation to download the app.

5.Kindle

Platform: WP7 and Android

Price: Free

Expanding its literary empire one smartphone platform at a time, Amazon has just announced a Kindle client for Windows Phone 7. This app works much like every other mobile Kindle app, with Amazon’s ‘Whispersync technology’ that syncs your last read page and bookmarks for each book across all of your Kindle devices. The Kindle Store is built-in for buying new eBooks, and it works seamlessly in portrait and landscape orientation. The Kindle client for Android has also been updated to let you buy newspapers and magazines (the first mobile app to offer this), and the Kindle Store now launches from within the app rather than launching the web version separately in a browser.
