Best 26in TV, Awards 2010. It's hard to find quality screens that don't seem over-priced for the inches on offer but this is a worthy Award-winner

Samsung’s got form at this TV size. In fact, this model’s predecessor, the LE26B450 took the prize for Best 26in TV in our Awards last year.

In terms of specification, the ‘C450 is far from a generational-leap: it’s still got an HD-Ready resolution of 1366 x 768, still has three HDMI inputs and a standard-def Freeview tuner.

That familiar red tint to the otherwise glossy black bezel also remains.

A touch of class
Of course, none of those are bad qualities. The spec is pretty standard for this screen size, and this is a very stylish looking set, with touch-sensitive controls that add an element of class to this often bare-bones end of the TV market.

We do have just a couple of minor complaints about the design, though: the remote is rather on the cluttered side, and the headphone socket is on the back of the set, making it a real challenge to get at if you choose to wall-mount.

Plug a Blu-ray or DVD player into one of the HDMI inputs, and the telly will automatically switch to its very warm and insipid ‘Cinema’ mode, but it’s a one-button press to switch back to ‘Standard’ and the quick and clear menu system makes it a breeze to make the few minor adjustments necessary to get it looking its very best.

Overall, the best we've seen
And its best is very good indeed. Play the scorpion battle from the Clash of the Titans Blu-ray and the Samsung immediately impresses with levels of detail that add a real sense of three-dimensionality to the desert setting.

There’s good punch to its whites and colours, proving that a set this size can provide cinematic thrills.

Skip to the Medusa chapter, and a couple of slight picture flaws do become apparent. Motion, though very decent, has just a smidge more judder and smear than leading rivals but, overall, this TV offers the best HD picture of its genre.

No Freeview HD tuner
A warning when switching to DVD – make sure that your source does the de-interlacing.

576i images are horribly smeary, but a simple switch to 576p clears it up nicely. Like other sets at this size, the Samsung lacks a Freeview HD tuner, but its off-air pictures are impressively vibrant and controlled.

This is not a perfect set, as our criticisms show. But it's the best all-round proposition we've seen at this screen size. At this price, there are inevitably performance compromises, but we'd definitely choose to go home with this Samsung.
