It is conceivably the most extreme case ever of life imitating art.
A chewy candy bar with the ironic name Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge has been recalled due to concerns that the bars contain elevated levels of lead. A press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that the heightened lead levels
potentially could cause health problems, particularly for infants, small children, and pregnant women.
The Indianapolis-based company that produces the confection, Circle City Marketing and Distributing, which does business as Candy Dynamics, has announced that is it pulling all flavors of the bars in what it describes as "an abundance of caution." The candy, which is made in Pakistan, comes in a variety of flavors, including sour apple, blue raspberry, and cherry bars.
The problem was discovered by the California Department of Public Health, which determined through routine inspections that the cherry flavor of the bars contained 0.24 parts per million of lead. The FDA limit on lead content is 0.1 parts per million. To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with consumption of the candy.
The potentially lead-laden bars were distributed to stores nationwide and also through mail order. The affected items are identified as:
* Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Cherry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81430 6),
* Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Sour Apple Chew Bar (UPC 0 10684 81410 7),
* Toxic Waste® Nuclear Sludge® Blue Raspberry Chew Bar (UPC 0 89894 81420 7).
Each bar has a net weight of 0.7 ounces.
Candy Dynamics urges customers in possession of the recalled product to telephone the company at 317-228-5012 for information on disposal. The lines are open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
The company claims that its other Toxic Waste candies, described on its website as "hazardously sour," are safe for consumption and are unaffected by the recall.
