Well it's the new year and there's a whole new crop of New Year's Resolutioners out there trying to follow through with, for the most part, half-hearted promises to themselves to somehow become better people. Unfortunately, for a lot of these people, their promises involve starting a membership at a gym or just getting back in the gym. What does that mean for us, the regular gym-goer? Well, perhaps it means a time to learn to be patient and tolerant of this temporary influx of members. Or perhaps it's just a time to be amused.
I seem to forget this every year when the new year begins that there will be a whole new crowd and many new faces in the gym. This is not only due to the new year and the traditional resolution that comes with it, but mainly due to the fact that the Gold's Gym I go to heavily markets to New Year's resolutioners around this time of year and promises these people better health, a better body, and more or less a better life. And I feel really bad when I see some of these people who were lured into coming and are aimlessly walking around, ill-prepared, with no clue what to do to get on track in meeting their goal, if they even have one.
A few days ago I saw a guy walking around confused with a huge neon clipboard. He was dabbling here and there and checking things off as he went. And you could tell he was a first-timer. Then you have the people that are all decked out in "workout" gear with all kinds of accessories like bandannas, wrist bands, water bottles, etc. It's as if some how if they dress the part, then they've done their job. And then I see the newbies who are doing all the exercises featured in various fitness magazines that are intended for the experienced weight lifters. Instead of sticking to the basics, they're risking injury trying to stand on one leg while lifting a dumbbell over their heads, or something of that nature. And I love the new-comers who just sit down on everything to rest and never get up. They just sit on equipment or machines like they're park benches. For $30-$40 a month they should have just sat at home.
What I'm getting at though is that although there is this sudden increase in membership, we must understand that it's not the new member's fault that they have no idea what to do or how to do it. It's only their fault if they never bother to learn the right way over a course of time. So we must just wait it out and work around these people. And if nothing else, they'll probably be gone in 2-3 weeks anyway. For most New Year's resolutioners, resolutions are hardly kept. This is especially true for ones that entail going to the gym on a regular basis. So next time a newbie gets in your way, does something stupid, or is treating the gym like their own living room, just know they'll probably be gone soon. And to the guy with the large clipboard who was walking around the gym like a lost boy at the grocery store looking for his mom, thank you for the laugh.
