In his words, Android being an open source operating system allows hackers to understand the architecture and source code for the platform. Google’s decision to fully open the source code of the system and keep its policies liberal in regard to selection of apps for Market, has given attackers more opportunities to create malicious code.
Talking about iOS, Chang added that Apple must be credited, as it very carefully addresses the process of security systems. Policies of Apple, which consist of keeping the large portion of source code of its OS closed, as well as increased control over the addition of applications in the App Store have allowed the company to create a more secure mobile platform. He goes on to say it is “impossible for certain types of viruses to operate on the iPhone.” He supported his statement by explaining that Apple uses a ‘sandbox concept’ which isolates the platform, preventing viruses from replicating themselves or decomposing and recomposing to avoid virus scanners.
At the same time, the expert did not call the Apple platform as absolutely invulnerable, highlighting a few signs of its imperfections. Nevertheless, he noted that the lion’s share of attacks carried out on those iOS devices that have been jailbroken (or hacked) and the malware attacks can also be attributed to the carelessness of users who visit malicious sites looking for downloads and free applications.
