Nursing student dismissed for Facebook photo

Doyle Byrnes, a 22 year old nursing student, was dismissed for posting to her Facebook page a picture of herself with a human placenta she was studying in one of her classes. Byrnes was in her final year of study at the Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas.

The school now faces legal problems because Byrnes filed a lawsuit asking for an injunction to reverse her dismissal and argues that not only were the photographs not in violation of school policy, she had posted them with the approval of her class instructor. Byrnes filed the lawsuit on December 23rd in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kansas.

The college explained and defended its actions in a statement. “We will not tolerate such insensitivity on the part of our nursing students. We also must protect the reputations of our business partners in health care.” A lawyer for the school issued a statement Monday refuting Byrnes claim that her instructor knew about or approved of the placenta pictures being posted on Byrne’s Facebook page.

The human placenta provides nutrients to the unborn baby and is discharged at birth. Byrne’s suit argues that during a November 10th laboratory class devoted to studying the organ she was among four students who asked if they could have their picture taken with it. The suit argues the instructor did not object when they began taking pictures.
